G. REES

In the spring of 1701, several Baptists in the counties of Pembroke and Cairmarthen, Wales, resolved to go to America; they met at Milford Haven in June 1701, embarked on the "William and Mary" and on the 8th of September landed at Philadelphia.
They were advised to settle about Pennepec which they did and remained about a year and a half. In 1703 they took up land in Newcastle Co. from Mr. Evans, Davis and Willis who had purchased said Welch Tract from
William Penn containing more than 30,000 acres. This tract was first in Pennsylvania, afterwards, upon the change of boundaries, in the State of Delaware.
The first visit of the Welch to Peedee, SC appears to have been made in the latter part of 1735. The lands near the forks above the Township on the Peedee River were petitioned for on Aug. 13, 1746. A tract containing
173,840 acres in Craven Co. SC. Ten thousand acres lying within the limits of the Township of Queensborough on the North side of the Peedee River; the remainder on the South side.
"Welch Neck" extended from "Crooked Creek" above, to the "Red Bluff" below, a distance of about 6 miles.
Welch Neck Church, organized in Jan. 1738 (Baptist), erected a house of worship on the east bank of the river a short distance above the Ferry.

According to the old family tree passed down through generations to A. E. Perkins, age 93 in 1982, Sulphur, LA, and according to much evidence gleaned from research, Samuel Perkins was the first of the ancestors of our Perkins line to come to America. he was from Wales, England, and was born either in 1700 or 1702 probably either in Pembrokeshire or Caermarthenshire, Wales. Just when he came to America is not known, but it is known that he had a daughter born in Welsh Tract, Pennsylvania, a son born in 1727 (not known exactly where but probably in SC), and a son born in Prince Frederick Parish SC in 1729; thur\s we know that he was in America by 1727.
Samuel married Miss G. Rees, had a daughter, Alice Perkins, born in Welsh Tract Pennsylvanie. Alice m. William Lucus who was b. in Delaware. In 1761 they were in SC. Indications are that they were in the Welsh Tract on the Pee Dee River because Alice Lucas is listed as a member of Welsh Neck Baptist Church of the Pee Dee Section (Townsend, Leah. "South Carolina Baptist" 1670-1805). There is also a John Perkins listed as a member. He was at one time thought to be her half brother. Records show that Alice was related to the Monaghans, a well-known family. (SC Historical Magazine: vol 27, p 212)
In 1727 Samuel and his wife had a son named Samuel. This is all that is known about him.
In 1729 Samuel Perkins and Miss G. Rees had a son named Rees, born in Pr. Fred. Par. (Craven Co), SC. It is from this son that our family is descended.
